Artist Statement: As a visual artist my main form of expression involves communication. I not only seek a dialogue between myself and my art, but also to create an exchange between myself and the viewer. My message is one that ascribes to the Zen ethos of defined simplicity, finding the subtle order that underlines chaos. I focus on the basic elements of art: line, shape, color and texture – and work to push them into new possibilities. I make art because it fills a deep-seated need to both express myself and communicate with others. The play between materials and concept is my catalyst; the spontaneity and evolution of a painting is my motivation. Finding a balance between the purely aesthetic and the deeply symbolic is the challenge; engaging others in my interests is the reward. Check out my work; whether you like it or dislike it, what you have to say about it gives me tremendous insight into our mutual, and not always exclusive, paradigms. Enjoy!

Since humankind's earliest days, the urgent desire to make a mark – to delineate – has persisted. The "Symbology" series touches upon this need for visual dialogue. The artmaking process is as equally important as the final product. I create these paintings in a dramatic and at times violent way. My techniques include but are not limited to hurling paint; staple guns; sandblasting; ripping, stabbing and/or dragging/walking on the canvas; and breaking and throwing glass over a piece. My inspiration draws upon a myriad of sources: Japanese action calligraphers, tribal petroglyphs, modern graffiti and the printed word. The result is an accumulation of abstract forms that mixes recognizable symbols and patterns with those of my inner world and imagination to initiate a dialogue that asks the viewer to contemplate the constantly evolving language formats with which we humans choose to express ourselves.

Line can be the most basic & yet most challenging aspect for an artist to convey. I decided to take the concept of the 2-D line a step further, visualizing its existence in the 3-D world: full of twists, turns & varied widths, lengths & textures. The color choice is purposely pared down to black & red to create a bold & dynamic tension & to further highlight the dramatic relationship between line, texture & form. Contrary to any preconceived notions regarding black & red, my color choice is not intended to indicate blood, violence, anger or anything of a similar vein. I wanted to create pieces that transcend & challenge the viewer’s notion of what a painting is: free from the confines of a square canvas & stretcher, the red line is given a physical body, allowed to wrap & flutter as it will. The deeply textured surfaces lend a defined rawness to the line's course, which still remains controlled & established. This body of work is an installation exhibit & changes depending on location.

Textured with sand and silicon caulk, this large painting was part of a series done in an action calligraphy style. It says "harmony" and was painted with a mop for a brush. Symbolically, I walked across the wet surface hand in hand with a former girlfriend, embedding our footsteps along a harmonious path together.

My inspiration for this series of work is my deep love and respect for certain tenets of Rastafari sprituality. The lion is a sacred protector and potent symbol of the movement. This series marks my ascent into the world of abstraction and a new way of looking at oil painting.

This category includes paintings that are not part of a specific series, including my one and only piece of the Grand Canyon (having resided in Arizona for six years, I felt obliged to do at least one).

Blair Sky Whitaker (b. 7-16-1981) is a Flagstaff, Arizona based artist who received a Bachelor of Fine Arts with an emphasis in Painting from Northern Arizona University. “Although my formal emphasis is in Painting, my body of work is far from limited to the 2-D mediums. At school, I took a Renaissance approach, studying the disciplines of sculpting, ceramics, calligraphy, painting, and printmaking. My artwork has been presented in a variety of contemporary art shows, galleries and installations, as well as permanent public works. My eclectic approach has given me a deep understanding of the subtle elements of art and artmaking. I find a pleasant paradox in utilizing a Zen aesthetic that strips away all but the most basic elements of art, while at the same time presenting bold, intricate and complex multimedia pieces.”
