Artist Statement: As a visual artist my main form of expression involves communication. I seek to not only find a dialogue between my self and my artwork, but also a dialogue between the viewer and my art. I put out a message that holds on to the zen ethos of defined simplicity, finding the subtle order that underlines chaos. I focus on basic elements of art: line, shape, color, and texture, and work to push them into new possibilities.I make art because it fills a deep seated need to express myself and communicate with others. The play between materials and concept is the catalyst. The spontaneity and evolution of a painting is my motivation. Finding a balance between the purely aesthetic and the deeply symbolic has been the challenge, engaging others in my interests has been the reward. check out some of my art work, like it or dislike it, what you have to say about it tells me more about you than it does about my art work. enjoy.

Since humankind's earliest days, the strive to make a mark has persisted. A recent series I have made draws from this need for visual dialogue, It is titled symbology. This is artwork that is about a process as well as a final product. I create these paintings in a dramatic and at times violent way. I draw inspiration from varied sources, Japanese action calligraphers, tribal petroglyphs, modern graffiti, and printed word. This has accumulated into an abstract form that mixes real symbols with those I have imagined, leaving the viewer to contemplate the constantly changing formats we choose to express the worlds languages. I make art because it fills a deep seated need to express myself and communicate with others. The play between materials and concept is the catalyst. The spontaneity and evolution of a painting is my motivation. Finding a balance between the purely aesthetic and the deeply symbolic has been the challenge, engaging others in my interests has been the reward.

For an artist line can be the most basic and yet most challenging aspect to convey. For these works I allowed the line to exist in the 3D world, full of twists and turns, with varied width length and texture. I have reduced things down to two colors, Black and Red, this gave a bold and dynamic tension and left me free to explore line, texture, and form. the color choice does not represent, blood, violence, aggression or any of your preconceived notions it is just what it is, black and red. I wanted to create painting’s that were more than painting’s. Free from the confines of a square canvass and stretcher, perhaps even a challenge to the notion of a painting, and certainly a challenge for the viewer. I have allowed the red line a physical body, breaking out and running free. these works are deeply textured and give a sense of the course and raw, while remaining controlled and established. This body of work is exhibited as an installation and changes from location to location.

this sereis of work deals with a deep love and respect for Rastafari, the paintings all deal with the lion, a sacred protector and symbol of Rastafari. This series was my ascent into the world of abstraction and a new way of looking at oil painting.

Blair Sky Whitaker (7-16-1981), is a Flagstaff, Arizona based artist who received a Bachelor of Fine Arts with an emphasis in painting from Northern Arizona University. “My formal emphasis may be in painting, though my body of work is far from limited to the 2D mediums, I utilizes a renaissance approach, studying the disciplines of sculpting, ceramics, calligraphy, painting , and printmaking. With all this said my true passion is aligned with glass lamp working (blown glass). My artwork has been presented in a variety of contemporary art shows, galleries, and installations, as well as permanent public works. my eclectic approach has left me with an deeper understanding of the more subtle elements of art. Extending my knowledge of the basic principles of art I thoughtfully apply these things to any medium. I find a pleasant paradox in utilizing a Zen approach of striping away all but the basic elements of of art, while at the same time presenting bold, intricate, and complex works."
