Symbology: A Painter's DialoguePosted by Blair Sky Whitaker on 7/10/2007Since humankind's earliest days, the urgent desire to make a mark – to delineate – has persisted. The "Symbology" series touches upon this need for visual dialogue. The artmaking process is as equally important as the final product. I create these paintings in a dramatic and at times violent way. My techniques include but are not limited to hurling paint; staple guns; sandblasting; ripping, stabbing and/or dragging/walking on the canvas; and breaking and throwing glass over a piece. My inspiration draws upon a myriad of sources: Japanese action calligraphers, tribal petroglyphs, modern graffiti and the printed word. The result is an accumulation of abstract forms that mixes recognizable symbols and patterns with those of my inner world and imagination to initiate a dialogue that asks the viewer to contemplate the constantly evolving language formats with which we humans choose to express ourselves.
