Since humankind's earliest days, the strive to make a mark has persisted. A recent series I have made draws from this need for visual dialogue, It is titled symbology. This is artwork that is about a process as well as a final product. I create these paintings in a dramatic and at times violent way. I draw inspiration from varied sources, Japanese action calligraphers, tribal petroglyphs, modern graffiti, and printed word. This has accumulated into an abstract form that mixes real symbols with those I have imagined, leaving the viewer to contemplate the constantly changing formats we choose to express the worlds languages. I make art because it fills a deep seated need to express myself and communicate with others. The play between materials and concept is the catalyst. The spontaneity and evolution of a painting is my motivation. Finding a balance between the purely aesthetic and the deeply symbolic has been the challenge, engaging others in my interests has been the reward.
