The Character of Line: A Bold RepresentationPosted by Blair Sky Whitaker on 7/10/2007Line can be the most basic & yet most challenging aspect for an artist to convey. I decided to take the concept of the 2-D line a step further, visualizing its existence in the 3-D world: full of twists, turns & varied widths, lengths & textures. The color choice is purposely pared down to black & red to create a bold & dynamic tension & to further highlight the dramatic relationship between line, texture & form. Contrary to any preconceived notions regarding black & red, my color choice is not intended to indicate blood, violence, anger or anything of a similar vein. I wanted to create pieces that transcend & challenge the viewer’s notion of what a painting is: free from the confines of a square canvas & stretcher, the red line is given a physical body, allowed to wrap & flutter as it will. The deeply textured surfaces lend a defined rawness to the line's course, which still remains controlled & established. This body of work is an installation exhibit & changes depending on location.
