symbology: A painters dialogue

symbology: A painters dialogue

(BlairSkyWhitaker)
Since humankind's earliest days, the strive to make a mark has persisted. A recent series I have made draws from this need for visual dialogue, It is titled symbology. This is artwork that is about a process as well as a final product. I create these paintings in a dramatic and at times violent way. I draw inspiration from varied sources, Japanese action calligraphers, tribal petroglyphs, modern graffiti, and printed word. This has accumulated into an abstract form that mixes real symbols with those I have imagined, leaving the viewer to contemplate the constantly changing formats we choose to express the worlds languages.
I make art because it fills a deep seated need to express myself and communicate with others. The play between materials and concept is the catalyst. The spontaneity and evolution of a painting is my motivation. Finding a balance between the purely aesthetic and the deeply symbolic has been the challenge, engaging others in my interests has been the reward.

The character of line: A bold representation

The character of line: A bold representation

(BlairSkyWhitaker)
For an artist line can be the most basic and yet most challenging aspect to convey. For these works I allowed the line to exist in the 3D world, full of twists and turns, with varied width length and texture. I have reduced things down to two colors, Black and Red, this gave a bold and dynamic tension and left me free to explore line, texture, and form. the color choice does not represent, blood, violence, aggression or any of your preconceived notions it is just what it is, black and red. I wanted to create painting’s that were more than painting’s. Free from the confines of a square canvass and stretcher, perhaps even a challenge to the notion of a painting, and certainly a challenge for the viewer. I have allowed the red line a physical body, breaking out and running free. these works are deeply textured and give a sense of the course and raw, while remaining controlled and established. This body of work is exhibited as an installation and changes from location to location.
